"Kinfolk" magazine created a now nearly ubiquitous contemporary visual aesthetic and design. Founded by Nathan and Katie Williams and Doug and Paige Bischoff, the conception of "Kinfolk" was sparked when lifestyle blogging was hitting its height, print was quickly declining, Instagram was still a curiousity and the recession of 2008 inspired a return to authentic, simple living known as the "slow movement". Photographs that are nearly Dutch Renaissance in their color pallette, and stories emphasizing quality of life through farm-to-table food culture, an emphasis on artisinal goods and strong connections to friends and family through shared experiences have elevated the quartlery to cult status. The "Kinfolk" influence is now so pervasive that one can find the visual style being copied in countless independent magazines as well as on the now impossible to ignore, Instagram. Volume One of this modern magazine classic is now very hard to find indeed.
