With text in playful, looping script and 27 full-page lithographic illustrations of animals at play, "Jolly Jungle Jingles" is a small masterpiece of color, design and delight for children. Notable, is that this exquisite book had both a female author, Ottilie Amend, and a female illustrator, Eleanor Bartè (both children of German immigrants). Bartè's whimsical illustrations are accompanied by Amend's short, memorable rhyming poetry. The sweet and childish, cursive style of the printed text in boxes of primary colors suits Amend's little poems and Bartè's gorgeous, deeply saturated, full-color illustrations. With exuberant color and fun themes, "Jolly Jungle Jingles" is a beautiful and scarce example of large format books published by the famous children's book publisher, P.F. Volland Company.
