Newark: Newark NOW, 2006. Small Broadside. (20.5 x 25.5 cm.) Heavy, raw, unbleached cardstock. All lettering and art in solid black ink. Framed. Fine. Item #39
In 2003, fresh from his unsuccessful run for Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, the year before, community organizer, Cory Booker, founded the nonprofit organization, Newark NOW. With the City of Newark struggling to shrug off the corruption, crime and poverty of the past, grassroots organizations stepped in to improve the quality of life for "Brick City" citizens. Newark NOW had the benefit of the high-profile, Cory Booker, who would eventually become Mayor of Newark in 2006. That same year his nonprofit held a celebration for those mostly unsung community members who most exemplified the "getting things done" spirit and who worked tirelessly for the greater good of Newark - the POWER 15. This scarce broadside captures the spirit of grassroots organizing at its finest and inaugurates 15 members for posterity.
