Habitat; Autumn and Christmas Catalogue
London: Terrence Conran, 1971. First Edition. Octavo. (36cm. x 21 cm.) 33pp. Color Photo illustrated wrappers. Photo illustrated throughout. Fine. Item #225
In 1964, Terrance Conran opened the doors of his London furniture store, "Habitat". Affordable, cool, aspirational home design was something brand new and "Swinging London" was all about newness. England was ready to put the deprivations of the Second World War far behind and Conran was spot on with his informal, fresh take on the home environment. Conran's "Habitat" would offer items like exotic middle eastern rugs, Le Corbusier chairs, bean bags and trend-setting items created by Italian designers -- all within the reach of most consumers. The immensely popular mail order catalogs were published annually and were only finally defeated in purpose and popularity by the now ubiquitous, IKEA. This "Habitat" catalog was published two years after the first (1969) making this a rare survivor among the earliest publications.
