Seven titles from the publisher, Hanuman Books. Hanuman books, have a cult following due to the originality, design and content of their little books. Based out of the equally cultishly famous Chelsea Hotel in New York City, art critic, Raymond Foye and painter, Francisco Clemente, published books that were all at once distinct, important and collectible. The books were letter-pressed in India -- the inspiration for their small format and colorful design was based on Indian prayer books. These miniature titles may have resembled prayer books on the outside; the text, however, was supplied by writers and artists deeply involved in the counterculture and avant-garde movements. Presented here: #13."Conjugal Contraries & Quart" (John Wieners); #33 "Historical Treasures" (Jack Smith); #34 "Garden of Ashes" (Cookie Mueller); #39 "Yesno" (Francis Picabia); #41 "Feminine Hijinx" (Dodie Bellamy); #45 "Wool Gathering" (Patti Smith); #47 "Idiot's Delight" (Robert Hunter). A delightful and culturally significant impact, in small packages by a publishing company appropriately named after the Hindu Monkey God.
