This recording of "Giovanni's Room" was a surprise, even to the staff of Calliope records who doubted that James Baldwin would actually show up to record. It was believed that, Baldwin, who had so many speaking engagements, might not to be able to squeeze in Calliope into his schedule. After all, Calliope didn't even have a reputation -- Baldwin's recording of an excerpt from "Giovanni's Room" would be their first record. But, show up he did and his professionalism and commitment to his craft amazed everyone. This passage is where the character of "David" remembers his childhood friend, "Joey". "Giovanni's Room" held a special place for Baldwin and listening to his voice here, is like listening to a jazz musician play music. Fitting that it was captured on a record.
